Spotlight & the Catholic Church

After seeing this movie I sat in my  car and cried , thinking to myself how could all of this happen?  I was raised a Catholic, I loved the church as a child. I found my faith that I still have today from the Catholic Church . My belief in Jesus, my knowing right from wrong , what is a sin--ALL from the Catholic Church, so don't take this review as me bashing God & religion. It is not--it IS me bashing man and the institution.  Like most things on the beautiful planet of ours, man tends to screw it up.  Growing up I always found it so odd in order to be a Cathloic priest you have to be celibate. I never to this day understood what your love of another person and wanting to be with wife/partner had to do with your faith in God.
The movie talks about how this attracts a certain kind of deviants. I really feel if this religion wants to get into the 21st century and scrub itself of its past--it needs to forget celibacy and also allow women priest. Teaching faith and love is much easier to do when you can express your love with someone else.  In the movie they did a study that 53% of priest were NOT celibate , and 6% of them were abusers towards children. There are many noble priest and many great Catholic Churches all over the world, heck I grew up in All Saints in Dunwoody GA--loved it. SO DONT TAKE MY RANT the wrong way.  This movie just frustrated the shit out me .
Think about it --kids that were the poorest and had the worst homes--where did they turn to?
The church to show them the way , yet these were the ones taken advantage of --Reminded me of Sandusky.  I won't get into the numbers, go watch the flick  but it was staggering, and it was just the city of Boston.  Geez, between this movie and Ray Donovan the TV show--did everyone who grew up in Boston have someone they knew growing up getting taken advantage of by a priest?  Seems like it!
I was really taken aback to the whole cover up.  So sad  how people just kept brushing it under the rug, but a GREAT movie--I was reminded of All the President's men with Hoffman & Redford. GREAT cast  Keaton & Ruffalo were fantastic.
And I always love a good movie that takes place in BawStun. I just love the accents , it makes for great story telling.
Watch it--discuss it with your kids, have a conversation with a neighbor, let's talk about this issue and not cover it up any longer.
Sorry for my rant--it just crushed the Catholic Church.
I give it a 8.5 out of 10!!!
